Posted by Troy Black on December 06, 2009 at 11:40:51: I'm just curious what
opinions are out there. This is not meant to open up a can of worms.
What an exciting points chase! There was more attention being paid to the
chase than I can ever remember. As exciting as it was and an election coming up,
I would like to know what the KCBS board candidates think about the current
points system. I know there are board members that think it needs to be changed,
divisions created for teams that don't compete as often as others, divisions
created for non-sponsored teams, which would leave a division of sponsored teams
with very few in it. (what exactly is considered a sponsored team and how would
you ever manage such distinction?)
There is a questionnaire on the KCBS web site that was sent out to it's
members regarding the TOY points system. One question that was not asked, which
I think was an important omission, was, "Do you compete? and if so, how many
contests per year?" My understanding is that most of the KCBS membership is made
up of judges, not competitors.
If you have a gripe with the current system, don't just bash it, offer up
your suggestions on how it could be better.
Troy

Posted by Pa__Bbq on November 29, 2009 at 09:21:17: I am looking to get
another smoker to add to my Char-Broil Offset, and 22 wsm. This will go on my
open porch, but not in direct wind.
Because its on my porch, does need to be safe. I believe both of these would
be fine as long as common sense was used.
I do have a stoker, so would be used with the bge if I went that route.
I am looking at quality of BBQ more than anything.
If I go with the bge, may get me a smaller cookshack for Christmas.

Posted by EarlyBird on November 11, 2009 at 10:29:52: At the KCSBS banquet in
Nashville early this year we were told that there would be live scoring for the
Team of the Year. It took them longer than they wanted to bring it online, but
this summer they delivered. It sure has been interesting watching teams
placements go up and down as the season progressed.
The 2009 BBQ season is winding down, with only 4 contests left on 3 weekends,
the TOY battle heating up. The top 6 teams are separated by 99 points. This
coming weekend the top 3 teams will be competing against each other at the 3rd
Annual Sun City Festival: BBQ Throwdown N Balloon Fest in Buckeye, AZ. Can Rod
Gray with Pellet Envy hang on to his 18 point lead? Will Steve, Mike and Charlie
with I Smell Smoke !! take the lead back to New England? Will Darrin AKA “The
Clone” with Iowa Smokey D’s make up more than 39 points and blow past both of
them? Which ones will be making the return trip to Arizona for the December 4
finale in Tempe? Hang on folks, this is going to be interesting.
Safe travels and good luck gentleman, may the best cook win.

Posted by Denny on November 27, 2009 at 18:59:46: I am going to build a place
to BBQ, I am using my porch that I modify by putting up plywood 4' high around
the 3 open sides to serve as a wind break, the 4th side is the house. I do use
caution and have grill sheets on the ground under the smoker.
I live in NW pa so lots of snow, wind and cold during the winter which is
when I have a chance to BBQ.
I have a Weber natural gas grill and 2 WSM, 1 18 and a 22.
Want some ideas on what to build, I do not want it attatched to the house for
safety reasons.

Posted by barbqr on November 15, 2009 at 16:55:59: I have three cast iron pans
that I tried to season. Put a light coat of cooking oil on them, placed in my
Weber grill upside down at about 350 or so until the coals went out. Opened the
lid and the bottoms showed rust on them. What happened. When I did my dutch
oven, it came out a nice black color.
Ideas?

What draws the older folks?? |

Posted by Woodburner on November 09, 2009 at 14:30:00: I hope I don't get in
trouble with this... I mean no disrespect whatsoever... I just need to know!
I made a stop at the old Nathan's Hot Dog place on Central Ave in Yonkers
(NY) today, and the clientele -- 90 percent over the age of 65, most over 80 --
pushed me over the edge to ask this question:
I have found that BBQ joints, hot dog joints, and places that generally are
not considered to be the most healthy, seem to draw older people in inordinate
numbers.
Got nuthin against older folks -- at 53 I consider myself a junior member --
but I first started noticing this when I went to the Austin, TX area, and KC,
and noticed (couldn't help it) that most BBQ patrons were older. Now the same
thing in this favorite greasy hot dog place.
It's not that these places are particularly inexpensive -- dogs are, get
this, $3 each! Is it that older folks want to eat what tastes good, and don't
care about sprouts and salads and trans fats and trips to the gym like many
younger people do?
Am I just wrong about this, and I need to go eat outside of the Early Bird
Special time window? When you hit the BBQ joints, look around... and tell me
"why?"
